What is Spondylosis?

Spondylosis is a descriptive term for spine pain and spine degeneration, but spondylosis is not a formal medical diagnosis. If you are experiencing spondylosis, our Board-Certified and Fellowship Trained Spine Team Specialist finds out exactly what is causing it.

Common Causes:

The three main causes are:

  • Osteoarthritis. The vertebral bones and soft tissues wear and tear because of overuse and age.
  • Spinal Stenosis. The spinal canal narrows and compresses the spinal nerve roots.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease. The intervertebral discs between adjacent vertebrae degenerate.

When diagnosing spondylosis, OPA Spine Specialists do the following:

  • Obtain a complete medical history
  • Perform a physical examination
  • Order and analyze X-ray’s or MRI

Common Treatments:

A customized treatment plan usually includes several treatment options. Nonsurgical options include:

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)

Decrease inflammation and pain.

Physical Therapy

One of OPA’s onsite physical therapist prescribes and monitors strengthening and stretching exercises.

Injections

An epidural injection of steroid and anesthetic medications.

Orthotics

Activity Modification

Nonsurgical treatment options effectively treat the majority of cases of spondylosis. If spondylosis is caused by severe osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease, our Board Certified Orthopedic Spine Surgeons may recommend minimally invasive spine surgery. With minimally invasive spine surgery, you will experience less postoperative pain and have a faster recovery than traditional open incision spine surgery patients.

Our Spine Surgeons are Fellowship Trained and Board Certified and among Alaska’s most experienced leaders in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.

At OPA, our Board-Certified and Fellowship-Trained Spine Specialists, Dr. Mark Flanum, Dr. James Eule, and Dr. Curtis Mina are experts in treating spondylosis.
