What is an Elbow Sprain?

Three bones join to form the elbow joint. Strong ligaments connect the humerus (arm bone), radius (large forearm bone) and ulna (small forearm bone). The elbow joint is very important because it moves the arm and forearm. Elbow injuries are common.

Common Causes:

  • Accidents
  • Direct blows
  • Falls
  • Sports

Symptoms of an Elbow Sprain may include:

  • Severe pain at the time of injury
  • A feeling of popping or tearing inside the elbow
  • Tenderness at the injury site
  • Swelling around the elbow
  • Bruising that appears soon after the injury

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms seek treatment by making an appointment with Orthopedic Physicians Alaska (OPA) Upper Extremity Specialist.

When you arrive for your initial consultation, Orthopedic Physicians Alaska (OPA) Upper Extremity Specialist will evaluate your areas of concern, discuss your symptoms, and develop a customized and comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. This evaluation is a necessary part of diagnosing your condition and providing the best possible care.

When diagnosing an elbow sprain, our experts will provide:

  • A medical, injury, and symptom history review
  • A physical examination
  • Multiple view x-rays ( to rule out a fracture)

Once an official diagnosis is made, a customized treatment plan is prescribed. Treatment plans decrease symptoms as quickly as possible.

Common Treatments:

Nonsurgical treatment options treat the majority of an elbow sprain. Immobilization is important. Placing the elbow in removable brace immobilizes the joint. This gives the ligaments time to heal. Other treatment options help reduce symptoms. The following are commonly prescribed:

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)

To decrease pain and swelling.

Physical Therapy

OPA approved physical therapist will provide exercises to stretch and strengthen the surrounding muscles, ligaments, and tendons.

Activity Modification

Slowing down or stopping activities that caused the injury or cause symptom flare-ups.

At OPA, our Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Orthopedic Upper Extremity Specialists are experts in treating elbow sprains.
